Ethos: I will make strong main and sub points and will back those points up with well thought out examples. My weak points will probably be in my career section of the speech because it will be difficult to come up with examples to back up points. I can overcome this by spending more time on this section of the speech and also not finishing or opening with the career section. My body language is also troublesome because I have a tenancy to just stand and not move when I give speeches. I can overcome this by practicing and by reminding my self to move around a little and not to just stand there and just talk.

Pathos: My pathos will be the stories I tell to back up my points I made for Career, family, and entertainment. The emotional responses that are appropriate would be like laughter or humor. But also it would be great to make a connection with the audience by telling stories people can relate to. I should avoid telling stories that cause sadness or anger. I can make a faster emotional connection by simply being a better story teller. It is easier to make an emotional connection with an audience if the audience is really listening and in to what you are saying.

Logos:
  1. Introduction
Thesis: It is difficult to breakdown someones life into just three categories. However, family, career, and entertainment are a pretty good breakdown. All three of these things are major parts of most peoples lives and all three are connected and make up who we are. There are common themes and characteristics that are true for all parts of life and that is honesty and hard work.
Focus on stories that challenge

  1. Body
    A. Family- My family and I are close there are six of us. I am going to talk about our family car ride to new York my junior year and talk about how it made us closer even though we fought quite a bit and also family can be entertainment in itself. My family is where I first learned to be honest and hard working.
    B. Career- My career right now is being a student. Being a student is what takes up the most time in my life. It is building me up for my career which right now I hope is a doctor. To be a good student I need to be honest and hardworking.
    C. Entertainment- My main source of entertainment is hanging out with my friends. My friends are very important to me and because I live away from my family I see my friends the most. Part of being a good friend is being honest to them and working hard at keeping up your relationship with them.
  2. Conclusion
    A. family entertainment and friends may are three major different parts of my life and may seem different but they do connect. This is because in all three parts it is important to be honest and hardworking.

Herb Brook Speech

The 1980 Olympic hockey team pulled of one of the greatest upsets in sports history by beating the Soviet Union in the Olympic semi final. The movie Miracle tells the story of this legendary team. Before the game against the Soviet Union Herb Brooks (played by Kurt Russel) comes out and gives them an amazing emotional speech.

Ethos: Herb Brooks is their Coach and his players respect and believe what he says. He also talks about how the team has earned to be in this game and they earned the right to win this game.

Pathos: This whole speech is meant to hit the team emotionally. He gets the team fired up and believing that they can beat the Soviet's. He brings down the Soviets by insulting them and he builds up his team and gets them emotionally ready to go.

Logos: He uses a logical by saying you deserve to be here you deserve to win so go and do it. He gives his team hope that they can really beat the Soviets.

Post game press conferences have always been a point of interest for any sport. A lot of great stories have come from post game press conferences, but they usually come from what was said at the press conferences. However, recently in the NBA it has been what the players have been wearing that has been interesting. In Wesley Morris's article The Rise of the NBA Nerd he talks about how there has been a change in dress at NBA press conference. Now great NBA stars like Kevin Durant and Lebron james having been dressing as nerds. This is opposed to earlier years where players dressed more “street”. Morris says this change in dress is attributed to his belief that 21st century blacks have lost their rigid center. Morris feels this change is part of a major change in African American culture. Morris says that it is becoming more and more acceptable to dress as Carlton Banks from the Fresh Prince of Be-lair. Morris sees a softening in African American culture. I feel that NBA stars are dressing as nerds because they think it is funny and it gets on the nerves of NBA commissioner David Stern. David stern has pushed for dress codes and a push away from wearing “street” clothing. I believe that stars like Durant and Lebron are doing it to fight the system. If Stern does not want them wearing “street” clothing or wearing what is “cool” they will go extrema in the other direction. That is why Durant wears his shirt buttoned up all the way and wears a back pack with big glasses. They are dressing like that to poke fun at David Stern's strive to make the NBA normal. I do not see a softening in African American culture.
